Tour Details

Island Peak 6160 meter also known as Imja Tse is one of the most popular trekking peaks in Nepal located at Khumbu valley or Everest region. The peak was named Island Peak in 1951 by Eric Shipton. Island peak is very famous Nepal Mountaineering Association peak (trekking peak) among the 33 NMA peaks. Island peak derives its name as the mountain looks like a sea of ice from along with one of the most enjoyable climbing occurrences.

Island Peak was first climbed in 1953 as part of a training exercise by a British expedition that went on to summit Mount Everest, which included Charles Evans, Alf Gregory, Charles Wylie and Tenzing Norgay, with seven Sherpas.

To climb Island Peak, one has the option of starting from a base camp at 5,087 meters (16,690 ft) and starting the climb between 1am or 2 am. Another popular option is to ascend to High Camp at around 5,600 meters (18,400 ft) to reduce the amount of effort and time needed for summit day. However, adequate water supply and concerns about sleeping at a higher altitude may dictate starting from base camp. Base camp to high camp is basically a hike, but just above high camp, some rocky steps require moderate scrambling and up through a broad open gully. At the top of the gully, glacier travel begins and proceeds up to a steep snow and ice slope. From here, fixed ropes may be set up by the guides for the strenuous ascent of nearly 100 meters (330 ft) to the summit ridge. The climb to the summit is somewhat difficult due to steep climbing.

Scaling of the Imja Tse or Island Peak gets rewarded by some of the most spectacular scenery of Himalayas in the Everest region. Once on the summit, see that the giant mountains, Amadoublem, Nuptse (7,879m), Lhotse (8,501m), Lhotse Middle Peak (8,410m) and Lhotse Shar (8,383m) make a semi circle in the north, views of Makalu (8475m) in the east, Baruntse and Ama Dablam in the south.

That peak is more charm for climbing. For many mountaineering enthusiasts, climbing Island Peak marks the preparation for a full scale Himalaya expedition in Nepal in the later years. For the serious mountaineers, Island Peak also peak serves the purpose of acclimatization before heading to the bigger mountain climbing.

Everest base camp trek combined with Island Peak climbing is probably the best trip in Nepal adored by adventure seekers. Asian Hiking Team’s a local travel agency organize Island peak climbing, trekking starting from Lukla all the way to visit Everest Base Camp continues trekking to Island base camp, summit the peak then end the trek in Lukla.
